Running is a fantastic way to stay healthy and active, but for individuals managing diabetes, the act of running can introduce unique challenges. By understanding how to navigate your blood sugar levels effectively, you can enjoy the many benefits of running while keeping your health in check. In this blog post, we will delve into essential tips and strategies for mastering the art of running with diabetes.

Understanding the Impact of Running on Blood Sugar Levels

Running, like any form of exercise, has the potential to either elevate or lower your blood sugar levels. For individuals with diabetes, this dynamic relationship can make managing blood sugar levels a bit complex. When engaging in physical activity such as running, your body's demand for energy increases, which can lead to a drop in blood sugar levels. Alternatively, in some cases, running can trigger the release of stress hormones that may cause blood sugar levels to rise.

Tips for Maintaining Stable Blood Sugar Levels while Running

1. Monitor Blood Sugar Levels Regularly

One of the most crucial aspects of running with diabetes is to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, both before and after your run. Understanding your baseline numbers can help you make informed decisions about managing your blood sugar levels effectively during your workout. I have used a continious glucose monitor since being diagnosed with diabetes. However, when running in half marathons, I also carry my finger stick glucometer in my hydration vest.

2. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for everyone, but it is particularly important for individuals with diabetes. Dehydration can impact blood sugar levels and overall performance. Remember to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your run.

During runs my favorite hydration Skratch Labs. I was introduced to Skratch while running the Leadville Heavy Half in June 2024. Skratch Labs has 2 different varities of hydration powder- regular and high carbohydrate. Depending on my blood glucose levels and what type of activies or run I will be doing cues me into which hydration powder I use. I AM NOT PAID TO ENDORSE SKRATCH. I have found through my running with diabetes adventures that their product has helped me maintain optium blood glucose levels. And they are a Colorado based company.

3. Fuel Your Body Wisely

Eating a balanced meal or snack before running can help stabilize blood sugar levels and provide the necessary energy for your workout. Consider foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates and protein to sustain your energy levels during the run.

4. Carry Glucose Tablets or Fast-Acting Carbs

Always carry fast-acting carbohydrates, such as glucose tablets or gels, with you during your run. These can come in handy if you experience a sudden drop in blood sugar levels and need a quick boost to continue your workout safely.

My hydration vest or pack are always filled with gels, chews, jerky, or Kind bars. My go to gels are GU Energy. I AM NOT PAID TO ENDORSE GU ENERGY. Again GU gels have helped me to maintain optium blood glucose levels during intense runs and CrossFit. Remember that everyone and their bodies are different. And if you haven't guessed for energy chews, it's Skratch Labs. My favorite flavor is the lemon and green tea.

5. Communicate with Your Healthcare Provider

Before embarking on a new running routine, consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that your exercise plan aligns with your overall diabetes management goals. They can provide valuable insights and guidance specific to your individual health needs. Always talk to your primary care provider or diabetic care team about any changes to your exercise plan.

Conclusion

Running with diabetes doesn't have to be daunting. By taking proactive steps to manage your blood sugar levels effectively, you can enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running while safeguarding your health. Remember, every individual's experience with diabetes is unique, so listen to your body, stay informed, and prioritize your well-being as you conquer the roads ahead.

In conclusion, mastering the art of running with diabetes is all about striking a balance between your love for running and your health priorities. By implementing the strategies outlined in this post and staying attuned to your body's needs, you can embark on your running journey with confidence and vitality. Remember, diabetes should never hinder your passion for running – it should fuel your determination to conquer new milestones while keeping your health in check.
